Chika Unigwe was born Enugu Nigeria. She studied at Universities in Nsukka and Leiden, where she earned her Ph.D in literature in 2004. Her work has appeared in several international leading magazines and journals including Wasafiri, Per Contra, Voices of the University of Winscosin and Okike.

Chika Unigwe has won several awards for her writing including the NLNG Prize in 2012, Commonwealth Short Story Award, and Caine Prize for African Writing.

She lives and works in the United States.
